Sydney, the state capital of New South Wales, was the first and is the largest city in Australia. It was a penal colony first settled in1788. Today it is famous for its Opera House, its harbour, its harbour bridge, surfing at Bondi beach(and others), its sophisticated and cosmopolitan population, its varied cuisine, its almost perfect weather, street cafes and so on.
In Port Campbell National Park on Victoria's coastline sit the 12 Apostles, limestone stacks that were left standing as the cliffs eroded. The stacks will eventually fall due to wave erosion but others will be left standing as the weather and sea continue to batter the cliffs. The park covers 1750 hectares with a visitor centre, car parks and walking tracks.
Ayres Rock(also Uluru) is a large impressive sandstone rock in the Simpson Desert part of the Northern Territory. It is estimated the rock took some 500 million years to form. The rock, a popular tourist attraction, has a diameter, at its base, of over 8kms and its flat top reaches a height of 348mts above the plain on which it sits.
Melbourne City, in the state of Victoria, flows along the shore of Port Phillip Bay. It is a thriving city with continual growth and claims to be the cultural capital of Australia. If visiting look out for the friendly and knowledgable City Ambassadors in their red uniforms, they are there to advise and offer assistance. Take a little time to visit the historic Queen Victoria Market.
If you only visit one attraction while in Australia, then make it the Great Barrier Reef. A natural wonder of the world it follows the north-east coast of Australia from Lady Elliot and Fraser Islands to, going north, Torres Strait, stretching some 2300 kms. A world heritage area, the reef comprises over 2,900 individual reefs. Day trips with diving and snorkelling are available.
On the Great Ocean Road near Torquay you will find Bells Beach home of the longest running surfing competition - The Rip Curl Surf. Held every Easter since 1961, it attracts some of the best professional surfers in the world. The waves here can be daunting but there are other beaches along the coast with conditions better suited to the beginner.
Tasmania is an island located 240 kms to the south of the Australian mainland. The waterfall to the left, Russell Falls, is in the Mount Field National Park. The area around the falls was designated Tasmania's first nature reserve in 1885. The park, along with Freycinet National Park, is Tasmania's oldest. The island offers stunning scenery, white beaches, fine food and a friendly welcome.
The outdoor life is part of Aussie culture and sport plays a major part in that. Internationally they are respected for various disciplines including Cricket(pictured here), Rugby Union and League, swimming and sailing(the America's Cup). Of particular interest is the continuing cricket battle with England for the the Ashes, an 11cm high urn.
